Overworld Nether
Divide X and Z by eight
Navigation tools · Overworld ↔ Nether
Line up portals and measure routes with Minecraft's coordinate scale. Your calculations stay right here in your browser.
Horizontal Overworld distance is compressed eight times in the Nether. Height stays the same.

Use this Minecraft Nether calculator to convert horizontal positions and plan a route. The formulas are straightforward; actual portal linking still depends on the world and nearby portals.
The Nether’s horizontal coordinate scale is eight times smaller than the Overworld’s. To estimate a matching Nether location, divide Overworld X and Z by eight. To convert a Nether X and Z back to the Overworld, multiply each by eight. The calculator applies this relationship to horizontal coordinates only; an optional Y value is carried through unchanged.
For example, Overworld coordinates X 800, Y 64, Z -400 convert to Nether X 100, Y 64, Z -50. In the reverse direction, Nether X -100, Y 64, Z 50 converts to Overworld X -800, Y 64, Z 400. The sign matters: negative values stay negative through multiplication or division.
Choose the converter that matches the coordinates you already have. Enter X and Z as numbers; include Y only if you want the same height shown in the result. Select Find Nether coordinates for Overworld inputs or Find Overworld coordinates for Nether inputs. The page accepts positive and negative values and decimals, and formats horizontal results to three decimal places. Invalid X or Z values display an inline error rather than a result.
The tool calculates the coordinate scale, not the best portal location. Existing portals, nearby portal search behavior, terrain, safe construction space, and vertical placement can affect in-game linking. Treat the calculated point as a horizontal target to investigate and build around, not a guarantee of portal placement.
Minecraft positions use X, Y, and Z axes. X and Z describe the horizontal plane; Y describes height. Coordinates can be positive, negative, or zero. Conversion scales the signed X and Z numbers directly, so a location west or north of the origin remains on the corresponding negative side after conversion. Y does not use the 8:1 scale.
The coordinate origin is the world coordinate position (0, 0) on the X/Z plane; it should not be confused with a particular player’s spawn point. This calculator does not inspect a world save, locate your spawn, or adjust for terrain.
The distance calculator compares two X/Z positions in the same coordinate system. It computes the horizontal Euclidean distance using the Pythagorean formula: the square root of the squared X difference plus the squared Z difference. For instance, points (0, 0) and (3, 4) are five blocks apart horizontally. Y is not part of this calculation, and the result does not account for walking around obstacles, elevation, or travel time.
If the route crosses dimensions, first convert the relevant position with the Overworld-to-Nether or Nether-to-Overworld calculator, then compare points expressed in the same dimension. For seed-based biome and structure planning, use the Minecraft Seed Explorer. The Item Wiki and recipe finder can help identify item records, but it does not calculate routes.
Quick answers
Common questions about how Minecraft coordinates work and how this tool converts between dimensions.
Minecraft uses three axes: X and Z describe horizontal position, and Y describes height. The X/Z origin is coordinate (0, 0); it is not necessarily a player spawn point. Coordinates can be positive or negative.
Divide the X and Z values by eight. The Y value stays the same. Enter your Overworld X and Z in the Overworld → Nether converter to get the matching Nether location.
Multiply the X and Z values by eight. The Y value stays the same. Enter your Nether X and Z in the Nether → Overworld converter to get the matching Overworld location.
The Nether is a separate dimension that is eight times smaller horizontally than the Overworld. This ratio means a Nether portal at one location links to a portal eight blocks away in the Overworld, letting players travel long distances quickly.
Negative coordinates are normal in Minecraft. X or Z values below zero place a location west or north of the origin. This tool supports negative values and decimals in every field.
Use the distance tool to compare two X/Z positions in the same dimension. It calculates the straight horizontal distance using the Pythagorean theorem — the direct line between the two points, not the travel path.
